Former New Jersey First Lady Dina Matos McGreevey is denying allegations that she was a willing participant in three-way sex involving her estranged husband, former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey, and her husband's chauffeur, Teddy Pedersen. The ménage a trois charge has been substantiated by Jim McGreevey in a statement issued to the press. Jim McGreevey resigned the governorship of the Garden State after it was revealed that he was a homosexual who had had a gay sexual relationship with a man whom he had appointed to state office, despite the man's lack of qualifications for the post. At the time of the first McGreevey scandal, Dina Matos McGreevey stated that she did not know that her husband was gay. The chauffeur, Teddy Pedersen, believes that she had every reason to suspect, if not know, that Jim McGreevey was gay from the time he was courting her. While denying that he himself suspected that Jim McGreevey was gay, he feels that their the former governor's proclivity for three-way sex involving another man should have tipped her off. The allegations of three-way sex were confirmed by Jim McGreevey in a statement to the Associated Press, but were denied by his wife. Dina Matos McGreevey claims that Teddy Pedersen's story of sexual hijinks is part of an orchestrated attempt by her estranged husband to discredit her. However, Pedersen already has made the allegations in a deposition linked to the McGreeveys' upcoming divorce trial. Pedersen told the New York Post that he is going public is because he thought Dina Matos McGreevey was a hypocrite for appearing on television and criticizing Eliot Spitzer's sexual behavior. Matos McGreevey was a natural for the talk- and news-show circuits as she had been the wife of a governor forced from office by a sex scandal. She had earlier made the rounds of TV during the Larry Craig gay sex scandal, when the Idaho Senator was arrested and pleaded guilty for soliciting sex from an undercover policeman in a public men's room. Dina Matos McGreevey's position as the totemic figure among cuckolded political wives was sealed when her husband asked for her blessing during his resignation speech. "I engaged in an adult consensual affair with another man, which violates my bonds of matrimony," Jim McGreevey said. "It was wrong. It was foolish. It was inexcusable. And for this, I ask the forgiveness and the grace of my wife." Interestingly, the twice-married McGreevey mentioned his love for his first wife in his going away speech, in which he claimed that he was a "Gay American," but did not mention his affection for his wife Dina. The couple split within three months. The Spitzer and McGreevey scandals are similar in that both involve the governor of an important Northeastern state being forced from office due to sexual dalliances that go beyond the pale of acceptable behavior by married men. Both men cheated on their wives, Spitzer with a prostitute and McGreevey with an opportunistic man who continually denies that he himself is gay. It is uncertain whether Eliot Spitzer used government funds to pay for his assignations with hookers, but he did take his state trooper guard along with him which may be considered an illegal conversion of public funds for private use. Jim McGreevey appointed his male lover, the Israeli Golan Cipel, to the position of homeland security adviser, a position Cipel was unqualified to fill and which he could not properly function in, as he was denied a security clearance for not being an American citizen. Cipel eventually resigned due to negative press coverage, and two years later, filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against McGreevey. It was then that Jim McGreevey came forward and admitted he had an affair with Cipel, and resigned as governor of the Garden State. Dina Matos McGreevey was criticized at the time for standing by her man, just as Hillary Rodham Clinton was criticized for supporting her husband Bill Clinton during his various "bimbo eruptions" and as Silda Wall Spitzer has been criticized for standing by her husband Eliot during his sex scandal. "People criticize," Matos McGreevey told the New York Daily News. "It's easy for someone on the outside to say, 'Why is she there?'" "You really don't know unless you have walked in her shoes. They've been married for 20 years, she's had three daughters with him. It's an almost automatic response to stand by him. And you really can't make rational decisions. It's very difficult because you are in a state of disbelief." The relationship between the McGreeveys soon decayed after his resignation and became acrimonious, as they fought over custody of their young daughter. In 2007, Mrs McGreevey published a book, Silent Partner: A Memoir of My Marriage, stating she didn't know her hubby was gay. As part of the legal maneuvering linked to her divorce, Dina Matos McGreevey is suing Jim McGreevey for $300,000 for damages related to the fact that she allegedly knew nothing of his homosexuality and thus was defrauded by her husband. Jim McGreevey countered her fraud allegation with the argument that since their union produced a daughter, there was no fraud. Matos McGreevey's lawsuit has been put in jeopardy by Teddy Pedersen's revelations of Dina's secret sexual past. Many observers expressed their incredulity that in the 21st century, a woman could be oblivious to her husband being gay, especially when he was having an affair with a man, the propriety of whose public relationship with her husband was being questioned by the press. Was Dina Matos McGreevey truly the victim of the manipulative Jim McGreevey, or was she just playing victim? Golan Cipel has claimed that Jim McGreevey was manipulative, but he -- like the second Mrs. McGreevey -- was caught with his pants down, and then tried to paint a portrait of himself as a victim of the immoral ex-governor. The role of victim is one that Dina Matos McGreevey has played very well and made a great deal of money from, while using it as a foxhole from which to attack her estranged husband during their divorce. Teddy Pedersen likely will be called by Jim McGreevey's attorneys as a friendly witness in their divorce trial. He claims that the only reason he has come forward with the revelations, other than to call Dina Matos McGreevey on her hypocrisy, is because she had involved him in their divorce trial. When informed of Dina Matos McGreevey's refutation of his charges, Teddy Pedersen told the New York Post, "Dina is still in denial. It's time for her to face the truth." Pedersen's deposition that is part of the McGreevey divorce records might never see the light of day, since it -- like the records of the recent Paul McCartney-Heather Mills McCartney divorce -- likely will be sealed. Teddy Pedersen likely will attempt to cash in, though, and the inevitable "Kiss & Tell" book will join the McGreevey library, Dina Matos McGreevey's Silent Partner and Jim McGreevey's The Confession, gathering dust on library bookshelves. It is unlikely that Dina Matos McGreevey will ever again make the rounds of the talk show circuit as a paragon of virtue, now that it has been alleged that she might have lived the same double life that she criticized Eliot Spitzer for. What is more likely is a second book, Dina's own Confession, and her reinvention as a different kind of victim. (The American public seemingly likes victims: Hillary Rodham Clinton has been making political capital from her self-ascribed victimhood for the better part of a generation, and continues to do so during her race for the Democratic Presidential nomination.) Dina Matos McGreevey has a chance at redemption by confessing her sins with a mea culpa that gives the American public the chance to cluck their tongues before extending forgiveness, while simultaneously being titillated by the sordid details of her sexual transgressions. Then, she should be welcomed back to the talk show circuit, to once again be embraced by our celebrity-mad and sex-obsessed popular culture.
