Former               New               Jersey               First               Lady               Dina               Matos               McGreevey               is               denying               allegations               that               she               was               a               willing               participant               in               three-way               sex               involving               her               estranged               husband,               former               New               Jersey               Governor               Jim               McGreevey,               and               her               husband's               chauffeur,               Teddy               Pedersen.

The               ménage               a               trois               charge               has               been               substantiated               by               Jim               McGreevey               in               a               statement               issued               to               the               press.

Jim               McGreevey               resigned               the               governorship               of               the               Garden               State               after               it               was               revealed               that               he               was               a               homosexual               who               had               had               a               gay               sexual               relationship               with               a               man               whom               he               had               appointed               to               state               office,               despite               the               man's               lack               of               qualifications               for               the               post.

At               the               time               of               the               first               McGreevey               scandal,               Dina               Matos               McGreevey               stated               that               she               did               not               know               that               her               husband               was               gay.
               The               chauffeur,               Teddy               Pedersen,               believes               that               she               had               every               reason               to               suspect,               if               not               know,               that               Jim               McGreevey               was               gay               from               the               time               he               was               courting               her.

While               denying               that               he               himself               suspected               that               Jim               McGreevey               was               gay,               he               feels               that               their               the               former               governor's               proclivity               for               three-way               sex               involving               another               man               should               have               tipped               her               off.
               The               allegations               of               three-way               sex               were               confirmed               by               Jim               McGreevey               in               a               statement               to               the               Associated               Press,               but               were               denied               by               his               wife.

Dina               Matos               McGreevey               claims               that               Teddy               Pedersen's               story               of               sexual               hijinks               is               part               of               an               orchestrated               attempt               by               her               estranged               husband               to               discredit               her.

However,               Pedersen               already               has               made               the               allegations               in               a               deposition               linked               to               the               McGreeveys'               upcoming               divorce               trial.
               Pedersen               told               the               New               York               Post               that               he               is               going               public               is               because               he               thought               Dina               Matos               McGreevey               was               a               hypocrite               for               appearing               on               television               and               criticizing               Eliot               Spitzer's               sexual               behavior.

Matos               McGreevey               was               a               natural               for               the               talk-               and               news-show               circuits               as               she               had               been               the               wife               of               a               governor               forced               from               office               by               a               sex               scandal.

She               had               earlier               made               the               rounds               of               TV               during               the               Larry               Craig               gay               sex               scandal,               when               the               Idaho               Senator               was               arrested               and               pleaded               guilty               for               soliciting               sex               from               an               undercover               policeman               in               a               public               men's               room.
               Dina               Matos               McGreevey's               position               as               the               totemic               figure               among               cuckolded               political               wives               was               sealed               when               her               husband               asked               for               her               blessing               during               his               resignation               speech.
               "I               engaged               in               an               adult               consensual               affair               with               another               man,               which               violates               my               bonds               of               matrimony,"               Jim               McGreevey               said.

"It               was               wrong.

It               was               foolish.

It               was               inexcusable.

And               for               this,               I               ask               the               forgiveness               and               the               grace               of               my               wife."
               Interestingly,               the               twice-married               McGreevey               mentioned               his               love               for               his               first               wife               in               his               going               away               speech,               in               which               he               claimed               that               he               was               a               "Gay               American,"               but               did               not               mention               his               affection               for               his               wife               Dina.

The               couple               split               within               three               months.
               The               Spitzer               and               McGreevey               scandals               are               similar               in               that               both               involve               the               governor               of               an               important               Northeastern               state               being               forced               from               office               due               to               sexual               dalliances               that               go               beyond               the               pale               of               acceptable               behavior               by               married               men.

Both               men               cheated               on               their               wives,               Spitzer               with               a               prostitute               and               McGreevey               with               an               opportunistic               man               who               continually               denies               that               he               himself               is               gay.

It               is               uncertain               whether               Eliot               Spitzer               used               government               funds               to               pay               for               his               assignations               with               hookers,               but               he               did               take               his               state               trooper               guard               along               with               him               which               may               be               considered               an               illegal               conversion               of               public               funds               for               private               use.
               Jim               McGreevey               appointed               his               male               lover,               the               Israeli               Golan               Cipel,               to               the               position               of               homeland               security               adviser,               a               position               Cipel               was               unqualified               to               fill               and               which               he               could               not               properly               function               in,               as               he               was               denied               a               security               clearance               for               not               being               an               American               citizen.

Cipel               eventually               resigned               due               to               negative               press               coverage,               and               two               years               later,               filed               a               sexual               harassment               lawsuit               against               McGreevey.

It               was               then               that               Jim               McGreevey               came               forward               and               admitted               he               had               an               affair               with               Cipel,               and               resigned               as               governor               of               the               Garden               State.
               Dina               Matos               McGreevey               was               criticized               at               the               time               for               standing               by               her               man,               just               as               Hillary               Rodham               Clinton               was               criticized               for               supporting               her               husband               Bill               Clinton               during               his               various               "bimbo               eruptions"               and               as               Silda               Wall               Spitzer               has               been               criticized               for               standing               by               her               husband               Eliot               during               his               sex               scandal.
               "People               criticize,"               Matos               McGreevey               told               the               New               York               Daily               News.

"It's               easy               for               someone               on               the               outside               to               say,               'Why               is               she               there?'"
               "You               really               don't               know               unless               you               have               walked               in               her               shoes.

They've               been               married               for               20               years,               she's               had               three               daughters               with               him.

It's               an               almost               automatic               response               to               stand               by               him.

And               you               really               can't               make               rational               decisions.

It's               very               difficult               because               you               are               in               a               state               of               disbelief."
               The               relationship               between               the               McGreeveys               soon               decayed               after               his               resignation               and               became               acrimonious,               as               they               fought               over               custody               of               their               young               daughter.

In               2007,               Mrs               McGreevey               published               a               book,               Silent               Partner:               A               Memoir               of               My               Marriage,               stating               she               didn't               know               her               hubby               was               gay.
               As               part               of               the               legal               maneuvering               linked               to               her               divorce,               Dina               Matos               McGreevey               is               suing               Jim               McGreevey               for               $300,000               for               damages               related               to               the               fact               that               she               allegedly               knew               nothing               of               his               homosexuality               and               thus               was               defrauded               by               her               husband.

Jim               McGreevey               countered               her               fraud               allegation               with               the               argument               that               since               their               union               produced               a               daughter,               there               was               no               fraud.
               Matos               McGreevey's               lawsuit               has               been               put               in               jeopardy               by               Teddy               Pedersen's               revelations               of               Dina's               secret               sexual               past.
               Many               observers               expressed               their               incredulity               that               in               the               21st               century,               a               woman               could               be               oblivious               to               her               husband               being               gay,               especially               when               he               was               having               an               affair               with               a               man,               the               propriety               of               whose               public               relationship               with               her               husband               was               being               questioned               by               the               press.

Was               Dina               Matos               McGreevey               truly               the               victim               of               the               manipulative               Jim               McGreevey,               or               was               she               just               playing               victim?
               Golan               Cipel               has               claimed               that               Jim               McGreevey               was               manipulative,               but               he               --               like               the               second               Mrs.

McGreevey               --               was               caught               with               his               pants               down,               and               then               tried               to               paint               a               portrait               of               himself               as               a               victim               of               the               immoral               ex-governor.
               The               role               of               victim               is               one               that               Dina               Matos               McGreevey               has               played               very               well               and               made               a               great               deal               of               money               from,               while               using               it               as               a               foxhole               from               which               to               attack               her               estranged               husband               during               their               divorce.
               Teddy               Pedersen               likely               will               be               called               by               Jim               McGreevey's               attorneys               as               a               friendly               witness               in               their               divorce               trial.

He               claims               that               the               only               reason               he               has               come               forward               with               the               revelations,               other               than               to               call               Dina               Matos               McGreevey               on               her               hypocrisy,               is               because               she               had               involved               him               in               their               divorce               trial.
               When               informed               of               Dina               Matos               McGreevey's               refutation               of               his               charges,               Teddy               Pedersen               told               the               New               York               Post,               "Dina               is               still               in               denial.

It's               time               for               her               to               face               the               truth."
               Pedersen's               deposition               that               is               part               of               the               McGreevey               divorce               records               might               never               see               the               light               of               day,               since               it               --               like               the               records               of               the               recent               Paul               McCartney-Heather               Mills               McCartney               divorce               --               likely               will               be               sealed.

Teddy               Pedersen               likely               will               attempt               to               cash               in,               though,               and               the               inevitable               "Kiss               &               Tell"               book               will               join               the               McGreevey               library,               Dina               Matos               McGreevey's               Silent               Partner               and               Jim               McGreevey's               The               Confession,               gathering               dust               on               library               bookshelves.
               It               is               unlikely               that               Dina               Matos               McGreevey               will               ever               again               make               the               rounds               of               the               talk               show               circuit               as               a               paragon               of               virtue,               now               that               it               has               been               alleged               that               she               might               have               lived               the               same               double               life               that               she               criticized               Eliot               Spitzer               for.

What               is               more               likely               is               a               second               book,               Dina's               own               Confession,               and               her               reinvention               as               a               different               kind               of               victim.

(The               American               public               seemingly               likes               victims:               Hillary               Rodham               Clinton               has               been               making               political               capital               from               her               self-ascribed               victimhood               for               the               better               part               of               a               generation,               and               continues               to               do               so               during               her               race               for               the               Democratic               Presidential               nomination.)
               Dina               Matos               McGreevey               has               a               chance               at               redemption               by               confessing               her               sins               with               a               mea               culpa               that               gives               the               American               public               the               chance               to               cluck               their               tongues               before               extending               forgiveness,               while               simultaneously               being               titillated               by               the               sordid               details               of               her               sexual               transgressions.

Then,               she               should               be               welcomed               back               to               the               talk               show               circuit,               to               once               again               be               embraced               by               our               celebrity-mad               and               sex-obsessed               popular               culture.
